Social Media Roundup

Last night I had the pleasure and privilege to join some of Halifax's finest Bloggers and social media experts at the first Third Thursday (or The Social Media Roundup as I have affectionately referred to it all week) meet and greet at The Argyle Bar & Grill.

It was great to recognize some friendly faces and see some new ones. Especially nice to see Lauren and Ben, who I do not see as much as I would like now that we are exploring the working world rather than the classroom.

The after work social was a great mix of marketing industry leaders, new professionals (like myself), non profits, freelance writers and bloggers of all levels. I found it interesting to speak with experienced Bloggers and even they said the challenging aspect of keeping and maintaining a blog is to find your "blog voice". It felt funny to meet people face to face for the first time, but have read their blog, or they have read mine. When I decided to call it a night, I left the social feeling inspired that grassroots networking events like this are not reserved for Toronto or New Brunswick as Carman Pirie joked, but could take place in Halifax.

This was also a great exercise in networking for new professionals. I was joking with a close friend, that it is so difficult to network with a plate of nachos sitting in front of me. When I was a PR student, I could not wait until I had a job and business cards so I could wear my big girl shoes and network with the pros. Now that that time has come, networking is sometimes a challenge. Opportunities like Third Thursday are small steps to honing my networking skills.

Special thanks to Ben and Carman for putting this together. I look forward to the months ahead where we can engage other Halifax bloggers on important topics like value, credibility and balance between radical innovation and traditional strategy. I look forward to the next one.

Cheers!
