The Uniform Project

A cool concept to raise money for a good cause. One dress, 365 days - no repeat outfits all for the Akanksha Foundation. The Uniform project was launched in May, 2009. You can check out the daily updates here.

"The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India."

No Doubt Rocks Steady

It blows my mind Gwen Stefani is 39! She has abs you could grate cheese on and has more energy than I could ever hope for.

The concert, at the sold out ACC, on June 16 was awesome! They played a tight 90 minute show that balanced between choreography and casual spontaneity. Spefani brought fans on to the stage and played a song off the setlist, but there were hardly breaks between the hits and the band was flawless. They opened with Spiderwebs, which at the time was a bit surprising, but a great intro to a bad ass show (can I say bad ass? I don't know about that one, I think you need to be bad ass to say bad ass).

I could have gone for a shorter opening act (Paramore) was too "girl schreechy" for my liking and Kristian and I used their opening act as a "beer run". As Kristian said, "I need to put some distance between me and yellow pants" (lead singer wore yellow skinnies).

Overall I am 100% satisfied; No Doubt played all my favourites:

I'm Just a Girl

Vote for the Bay of Fundy

You may recall the Bay of Fundy was the runner up to Alberta's Dinosaur Provincial Park for in the New 7 Wonders of Nature online voting contest. With a gracious wave and sparkling tear, the Bay of Fundy accepted her defeat.

BUT, due to an unexpected (and unexplained) disqualification, Alberta's Dinos are out and the Bay of Fundy is back in! The Bay of Fundy will now move to the second phase that will narrow the original 261 nominees to the top 77. The other Canadians competing are Niagara Falls and Lake Superior.

A total of 261 qualified national and multinational nominees from 222 countries are participating in the contest - more than participated in the Olympic games, more countries than are members of the United Nations are currently involved in the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Head over to Votemyfundy.com page and vote with every email address you have for the Bay of Fundy (try to recall the long forgotten passwords to Dragonslayer1000@hotmail.com and AngelKittenFace@hotmail.com). Voting is a bit tedious and time consuming, but it is worth it in the end.

And if you’re interested, here are some fast facts about the Bay:

  • The ebb and flow of the Fundy tides are equal to the output of 250 nuclear power stations.
  • Folklore in the Mi'Kmaq claims that the tides in the Bay of Fundy are caused by a giant whale splashing in the water
  • During the 12.4 hour tidal period, 115 billion tonnes of water flow in and out of the bay
  • Due to the Fundy tides, The Saint John River sees it flow reversed at high tide, causing a series of rapids at the famous Reversing Falls where the river empties into the bay, in a gorge in the middle of the city of Saint John, New Brunswick

Vote now; vote often.

Consumed books - 2009 (and a little bit of '08)

2009 has been the year of the book. Things have settled and I rekindled my love for fiction (and the odd nonfiction). I took the opportunity to read some selections that were skipped during university or have always been on the 'must read' list.

I have also come to realize I love Canadian fiction! What a beautiful realization.

To date, my nose has been stuck between the pages of:

The Outlander, Gil Adamson (C)
The Handsmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood (C)
She's Come Undone, Wally Lamb
Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold
Lullabies for Little Criminals, Healther O'Neil (C)
A Complicated Kindness, Miriam Toews (C)
The Fat Women Next Door is Pregnant, Michel Tremblay (C)
Fruit, Brian Francis (C)
The Book of Negroes, Lawrence Hill (C) - Winner of CBC Reads 2009
Mercy Among the Children, David Adam Richards (C)
The Trophy Kids Grow Up, Ron Alsop
Black Snow, Jon Tattrie (C)
The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini
The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Kidd

Reading right now: The Englishman's Boy, Guy Vanderhaeghe (C)

Bloomin' Paper

Goal of 2009 - marketing piece on botanical blooming paper!

What a clever idea! Botanical Paperworks make greeting cards, business cards, calendars, and bookmarks on seeded paper. Receive it. Read it. Plant it. Love it!

I discovered this company when I purchased a cute green and brown wedding card for a friend's bridal shower. Let's just say, the wildflower card was a hit! The gift, a blender, less exciting.

I want to make a brochure, rack card or marketing piece printed on this paper.

And a Canadian company.

We are living in exponential times

Interesting things to note:

  1. Top jobs in 2010, did not exist in 2004
  2. 13 billion questions were asked to Google last month; who were those questions posed to before Google?
  3. Years it took to reach a market audience of 50 million: radio: 38; TV: 13; Internet: 4; iPod: 3; Facebook: 2
Says a lot for spread of information and technology. What do you think the answer to the last question is?
